Where to Hunt Ghosts on Cannock Chase this Halloween

Where to Hunt Ghosts on Cannock Chase this Halloween

Cannock Chase in Staffordshire is known around the world for being one of the most haunted locations on the planet. The 26-mile-square forest has been the site of thousands of paranormal encounters dating back hundreds of years, with reports of ghosts, phantoms, a pig-man, werewolves, black eyed children, and more.

Halloween is a popular time for the Staffordshire woodland as ghost hunting teams and brave locals venture into the forest in search of something spooky. This year is no different to any other. There are already ghost walk events listed on Facebook, and as we enter Halloween week, more and more people will take late night outings in the hope of witnessing something paranormal for themselves.

This article contains everything you need to know about the best locations on Cannock Chase for ghost hunting. All of the areas mentioned have played host to numerous supernatural encounters over the years, and they're probably the places in which you are most likely to see something unusual.

Castle Ring

Constructed more than 2000 years ago by a Celtic tribe known as the Cornovii, Castle Ring is an ancient hillfort that exsists at the highest point of Cannock Chase. There is a pub nearby and a small car park. Entry is free, and anyone can take a walk around the area in search of ghosts this Halloween.

Local people have reported seeing werewolves at this location, as well as ghost-dogs, spirits, and the elusive Pig-man. Legend has it the Pig-man was the result of some military experiments that happened in the prisoner of war camps on Cannock Chase during WW2, and there is a rhyme that children recite in local playgrounds that goes:

When night falls, enter the woods at your peril
For inside, lurks something worse than the devil
Avoid at all costs, the gathering place
Where at midnight, the Pig-man roams on Cannock Chase

The path around Castle Ring is quite accessible, but wheelchair users might experience some issues. Still, it's a great little walk, there's a fantastic view out over Rugeley and the rest of Cannock Chase, and it's a hive of supernatural activity.

Birches Valley

Birches Valley is a large area of woodland in Cannock Chase that has a visitors centre, a childrens play area, and lots of other activities during the daytime. However, when the sun goes down, Birches Valley is probably one of the spookiest parts of the forest.

The dense woodland has many paths you can walk in search of ghosts, and sightings of the famous Black Eyed Child are commonplace.

In 2014, the Black Eyed Child phenomenon put Cannock Chase in the international news for a number of weeks. Ever since that time, there have been hundreds of sighting reports, and some ghost hunting teams have even managed to capture video evidence.

German Cemetery

During WW2, Cannock Chase was used as a military training ground and prisoner of war camp. When the war ended, the UK made a deal with Germany that resulted in more than 5,000 German war dead being buried in the Staffordshire forest. To this day, it is one of the most haunted locations on Cannock Chase.

People often report seeing the ghosts of soldiers wearing German and British uniforms in the graveyard and around it. There are even reports of a werewolf being spotted in the cemetery that once made it into the local news.

The graveyard itself is closed at night, but there is a road you can walk down that runs alongside it. There is only a small wire fence which does not obstruct your view, and so it's the ideal place to observe the area looking for ghosts.

Most reports of paranormal activity tend to happen in the early evening through to around 2am.

Pye Green Tower

Built as part of the UK's Cold War emergency communications network, this structure is visible from almost everywhere in Cannock Chase and much further afield.

The Pye Green tower has long been the location of many UFO sightings, and there are even police reports that detail mass encounters with unexplained objects in the area. However, most people were unaware about paranormal reports associated with the tower until recently.

In the new book, Ghosts of Cannock Chase, paranormal investigator and author Lee Brickley highlights a series of sighting reports in which people have witnessed the ghost of a man stood outside the Pye Green tower attempting to stop cars for a lift.

Many local pepple have encountered this spirit, and it is said to be the ghost of a man who used to work there during the 1950s or 60s.

Allegedly, the man would always thumb a lift home after work in the evenings, and for whatever reason, his spirit still does.

If you want to know more about the spookiest locations on Cannock Chase, and you want to learn about some of the most terrifying paranormal encounters that happen in the forest and the local area, grab a copy of this new book from Amazon. Just click here or click the book image above.

Whatever you decide to do this Halloween or wherever you decide to go, stay safe.

Are you brave enough to find out what's really in the woods at Cannock Chase?

A Weed-Smoking Poltergeist? Must be Cannock Chase!

A Weed-Smoking Poltergeist? Must be Cannock Chase!

Living in a flat above a shop usually means you are subjected to many unusual smells and sounds during the daytime depending on the niche in which that shop exists. If you spent your time in a dwelling located above a bakery for instance, you’d probably wake up feeling hungry every day due to the pastries being cooked only a few metres away from your bed. If you lived above a hairdressers, you might even have to keep your windows closed during the day. However, nobody really thinks about what might happen at night until it’s too late.

Sarah Mills lived on her own and so she rented the cheapest property she could find. She split from her last boyfriend more than six months ago, and apart from going to work, rarely moved from in front of her television. The flat she rented was directly above a sandwich shop in the village of Heath Hayes, just outside of Cannock.

She would wake every morning to the smell of fried bacon and sausage, but that didn’t bother her too much. In fact, she never once complained about a smell during the daytime. It was the ones at night that begam to cause a problem.

Sarah had been living in the flat for around three months when she first began to notice something odd happening during the early hours of the morning. She would wake up in her bed and instantly get the strongest whiff of cannabis smoke. Sarah presumed someone was going into the shop downstairs at night and smoking it, or maybe they were even growing it in a backroom or something. After a couple of nights of this, Sarah decided to investigate.

One morning, just before she left for her office job, Sarah nipped into the sandwich shop beneath her flat and approached the counter. She asked the ladies working there if they could ever smell weed, and she explained what had been happening during the night. The ladies were perplexed, and slightly amused, but they were adamant the pungent odor was definitely not coming from their shop. They did, however, agree to check their CCTV cameras in case someone had been sneaking in during the night.

That evening, Sarah arrived home to find a note pushed through her front door.

It was from the ladies downstairs who run the sandwich shop. They explained that the CCTV didn’t show anything unusual, and so the smell must be coming from somewhere else. The issue was, there was literally nowhere else it could be coming from. Sarah was confused, but her quest for discovering the truth only strengthened.

That evening, at the same time as the last few nights, Sarah awoke in her bedroom to the strong smell of marijuana. But this time something was different. She couldn’t place her finger on it, but she almost felt like she was being watched. All of a sudden, Sarah jumped out of bed and ran towards her living room after hearing the sound of something smashing. It was a photograph of her brother. The frame and glass were both smashed, and the picture lay on her living room carpet.

Sarah’s brother passed away three years ago at the age of 33. He suffered a sudden heart attack and never recovered. The doctors said he had some unusual health defect that he’d lived with his entire life. They just discovered it too late to offer treatment. Another interesting thing about Sarah’s brother is that he loved to smoke.

Everything fell into place, and Sarah realised her brother was most likely attempting to make contact from beyond the grave.

She did some research online to find out if there was anything she could do to assist her brother’s spirit to communicate, and she decided to order a ouija board. It would arrive two days later, but things didn’t exactly go according to plan.

Sarah decided she would wait until she was awoken by the smell of cannabis again before she used the ouija board, but right on cue, that happened the following night. Sarah ran into her living room and sat down near the board. She placed her fingers on the glass and said “does anyone want to communicate?” In a flash, three ornaments on her mantelpiece flew across the room, and the glass under her fingertips began to move. The glass spelled out the word “run.”

Just then, every door in Sarah’s flat slammed shut, and the floor began to rumble. She was worried it was an earthquake, but her logical mind told her this was something paranormal. Sarah, taking advice from the ouija board, got up from the table and exited her flat. She walked down the stairs and into the road in front of the building. As Sarah glanced up at her living room window, she saw what she describes as a demon with horns and red eyes glaring back at her.

Needless to say, Sarah moved out of that flat the very next day. She told her landlord there was a rat problem to avoid losing her deposit, and found somewhere else to live locally.

She now believes her brother wasn’t the only spirit attempting to make contact with her. She believes her brother used to smell of cannabis to get her attention, as she knew he loved to smoke, and then warned her just in time about an evil force looking to either take over the space or worse, maybe even possess her.

No matter what the truth might be, Sarah seems to have had a lucky escape.
